Dr. Shawn Apostel

Instructional Technology Specialist

Dr. Shawn Apostel is the Instructional Technology Specialist at Bellarmine University where he provides support to faculty and IT to facilitate online and classroom instruction that incorporates technology. Prior to his appointment, he served as the Communication Coordinator for the Noel Studio for Academic Creativity at Eastern Kentucky University from 2010-2013, and the Information and Graphics Specialist for the City of Toccoa from 2008-2010. A graphic designer by trade, Dr. Apostel has a B.A. in Journalism from Toccoa Falls College, an M.A. in Professional Communication from Clemson University, and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Technical Communication from Michigan Technological University.

Dr. Apostel's research interests include teaching with technology, applied creativity, digital ethos, e-waste reduction, and visual communication. He is chair of the Visual Rhetoric Panel for the South Atlantic Modern Language Association and serves as a reviewer for various journals and conferences. His work is published by IGI Global, CCDigital Press, Lexington Books, New Forums Press, and Computers and Composition Online. His co-edited book Online Credibility and Digital Ethos: Evaluating Computer-Mediated Communication was published by IGI Global in December, and his co-authored book Teaching Creative Thinking: A New Pedagogy for the 21st Century will be published by New Forums Press this Spring.

Dr. Anne B. Bucalos

Director of Faculty Development

Dr. Bucalos serves as the Director of Faculty Development and the NCATE coordinator for the School of Education. Prior to her appointment as Faculty Development Director, she served as the Associate Dean of the School of Education from 2007-2012. As a Bellarmine faculty member she also served as Undergraduate Chair in Education from 2000-2006. Dr. Bucalos earned her M.Ed. and Ed.D from the University of Kentucky with an emphasis in Special Education. She holds a B.A. degree in Psychology and Secondary Education from Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Bucalos’ research interests include educator dispositions, adolescent behavior disorders, and generational differences. She has published in these areas and has presented at national and international conferences. Dr. Bucalos currently serves as the south regional representative for the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education (AILACTE) and as a member of the AILACTE Journal editorial board. Dr. David M. Mahan

Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness

Dr. David M. Mahan is Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Bellarmine University. Since 2006, Dr. Mahan has conducted research and assessment projects in multiple areas of the university, such as enrollment management, student learning in the general education program, regional and discipline-specific accreditation, and HEOA compliance. He is also responsible for data submissions to the state and federal government.

Dr. Mahan has focused his research on first-generation student success, student engagement, and standardized assessments of general education skills and knowledge. He is involved in local and national research projects, participating on the data committee for 55,000 Degrees (formerly Louisville Mayor’s Education Roundtable) and the Association of Institutional Research (AIR) fellowship for graduate studies. Before working in higher education, Dr. Mahan held various roles in sales and marketing with LexisNexis. He earned a B.A. from Bellarmine University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Organization Development from the University of Louisville.

Mike Rudolph

Assistant Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness

Mike Rudolph serves as the Assistant Director of Institutional Research and Assessment at Bellarmine University. He works closely with the Director of Institutional Research to conduct research and assessment projects, compile and report information to guidebook surveys, complete IPEDS and CPE reports, and respond to data requests across campus. Prior to joining Bellarmine, Mike served as an Academic Advisor in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Kentucky. He earned an M.S. in Chemistry from Indiana University Bloomington with an emphasis in Nuclear Chemistry. He holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of the Cumberlands.

Mike’s research interests include college student retention, college and university reputation and prestige, alumni outcomes, and the effectiveness of academic advising models. Since joining Bellarmine, he has focused on the retention of residents and commuters, the results of the 2012 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), and the MAP-Works student transition surveys.

Dr. John K. Stemmer

Director of Library Services

Dr. Stemmer is the Director of Library Services at Bellarmine University. He has more than 19 years of experience in a number of research libraries at institutions including Raymond Walters College, Virginia Tech, and Xavier University. He earned his Ph.D. in Higher Education from Ohio University and holds an MLS from Indiana University.

Dr. Stemmer’s professional activities since coming to Bellarmine have focused on fostering collaboration among academic libraries by serving as the founding chair of the Federation of Kentucky Academic Libraries (FoKAL) consortium and chairing funding subcommittees for the Kentucky Virtual Library. His current research interest is developing library assessment to highlight the value of academic libraries and their support for student learning.
