Assistance Vice President for Academic Affairs

The General Education and Assessment unit is dedicated to ensuring that our general education program offers all our undergraduate students a liberal arts education which, when coupled with their major field of study, allows them to develop the intellectual, moral, ethical, and professional competencies for successful living, work, leadership, and service to others. The unit is also committed to fostering an educational environment committed to excellence, academic freedom, and authentic conversations for all our students (undergraduate and graduate) through the effective use of information collected through the assessment of all University units and programs.

The unit includes the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, the W. L. Lyons Brown Library, the Thomas Merton Center, and administrative responsibility for the IDC Program, the Galileo Learning Community, and the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

Dr. Ellis is the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs overseeing General Education and Assessment. Prior to his appointment as AVPAA, he served as the President of Faculty Assembly from 1994-95 and a member of the Board of Trustees from 1998-2000. As a Bellarmine faculty member he also served as Chair of the Dept. of Chemistry and Physics from 1991-1998 and from 2006-2010. Dr. Ellis earned his Ph.D. from the University of East Anglia (U.K.) with an emphasis in Physical Organic Chemistry. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Sciences from the University of East Anglia.

Dr. Ellis’ research interest and publications are focused on chemical education. He is frequently asked to serve as reviewer by publishers of Chemistry textbooks. Dr. Ellis served as a reviewer for American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund from 2000-2004 and he currently serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Chemical Education (2001-2012).
