The In-Law Suite at Shady Brook
serves as a pocket-sized home base for a wide-traveling parent. A
few select pieces of furniture brought from “the big house” must
now play new roles and serve multiple functions in the compact
environs of this studio apartment. The breakfront is a repository
for books as well as a dresser. By day the bed functions as an
informal sofa. A chinoiserie chest-on-stand can hold a small
television, while the sideboard under the dormer window is now
used as a dressing table, its bench a home for a peripatetic
pooch. A pair of demilune commodes between the windows provides
additional storage; while chairs flanking the breakfront can be
pulled up to the table to seat four for dinner or an afternoon of
cards.
Large windows provide the room with plenty of light, enhanced
by a soothing background of shades of almond. A subtle strie-striped
wallcovering pulls the room’s disparate corners, ells and dormer
together to create a cohesive background. The printed cotton
chintz covering the club chair is a document print taken from an
18th century
gentleman’s dressing gown and introduces accents of lush red and
green to the room’s neutrals. These colors extend into the
adjoining bath, completing a suite that offers a calm respite
between travels. |
