Mohr, originally a native of Columbus, Ohio, applied for the internship in January of 2009, and began work in the congressman’s district office in May, shortly after finishing her junior year. When asked about her decision to take on such an internship, Mohr says, “I was just always interested in the process, and it definitely gave me insight.”
Mohr explains that the district office works directly with “a lot of constituent concerns, not necessarily legislation,” so she spent most of her time answering phones and speaking directly with Yarmuth’s constituents. “There was a lot going on legislatively this summer…I took a lot of calls, especially about the energy bill.”
Mohr claims the internship experience has led her to believe in the importance of non-profit agencies, and helped her decide on her career path after graduation: “I plan on going more into the sociology direction,” she says, “I saw that there are so many people who are having healthcare or social security issues that I think non-profit work is very important.” Mohr plans to earn a Master’s Degree in Sociology after graduating from BU.
