The Advantages of Internships

An internship offers supervised experience and on-the-job learning to bridge classroom theory with professional practice. Upperclassmen should explore numerous internships available in Greater Louisville, as well as other opportunities across the nation and around the world.  Students can create customized internships to support their individual academic and professional goals. Aside from providing valuable work experience, additional features and benefits include the following.

  • A variety of paid and unpaid internship opportunities with organizations large and small, for-profit and not-for-profit.
  • Full-time or part-time work, during the school year or over the summer.
  • Earning up to three academic credits for each unique internship experience (with faculty approval)
  • The opportunity to test-drive a potential career, employer, industry and/or location of interest.
  • The potential to turn your internship into full-time job offer from your employer and others who value directly-related work experience.

Over 70% of all Bellarmine students complete one or more internships for academic credit, and nearly all participate in some kind of experiential learning before they graduate. Internships help diversify students’ background and experience. While it’s good to have an area of strength – a focus for your career – more diverse skills in a variety of fields can make students more marketable to potential employers.

To get started on preparing for participation in the internship program, students should contact the Career Development Office.
