Tutor Training Levels and Requirements

Level I Requirements

  • sophomore class or above (freshman tutors may be approved individually on a case-by-case basis)
  • a B+ final grade for courses for which you would like to tutor
  • completed application (on ARC website—submit to Debbie Burgin at dburgin@bellarmine.edu)
  • a recommendation from the professor of the course
  • cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

Definition/Training of a Level I Tutor

  • attend training sessions in fall
  • attend a one-hour mid-term meeting (time and date TBA)
  • complete a one-hour observation of an experienced tutor
  • be observed once by the director of the writing center during first semester as a tutor

Level II Requirements

  • junior class or above
  • at least 1 academic year experience tutoring (or equivalent experience on a case-by-case basis)
  • a B+ final grade for courses for which you would like to tutor
  • a recommendation from the professor of the course
  • cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

Definition/Training of a Level II Tutor

  • attend 1.5 hrs. of training in fall
  • attend a one-hour mid-term meeting (time and date TBA)
  • be willing to help plan/orchestrate midterm meeting (if necessary)

Level III Requirements

  • junior class or above
  • at least 2 academic years experience with tutoring (or equivalent experience on a case-by-case basis)
  • a B+ final grade for courses for which you would like to tutor
  • a recommendation from the professor of the course
  • cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

Definition/Training of a Level III Tutor

  • attend 1.5 hrs. of training in the fall
  • help plan/orchestrate initial training for Level 1 tutors (as needed)
  • perform observations for Level 1 tutors (approximately 1-2) as needed
