Knights fall to #22 Lewis in straight sets
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 7, 2008)—The Bellarmine University volleyball team lost in straight sets to visiting Lewis University 25-16, 26-24, 25-23 tonight in Knights Hall.
The Flyers, ranked 22nd nationally, extended their lead in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's East division with a record of 16-1, and stand at 28-6 overall. The Knights held on to fourth place at 7-10 (7-16 overall). Bellarmine will qualify for the GLVC postseason tournament with a victory over Wisconsin-Parkside in their regular season finale tomorrow at Knights Hall.
Lewis ran out to a quick early lead, and won the first set handily. However, the Knights battled back with strong second and third sets, but couldn't get past the highly regarded visitors.
Bellarmine was led once again by GLVC points per set leader Emily Beckman, who rang up 17 kills. Setter Caryn Schoeff had 37 assists for the match, and Lauren Gosnell turned in a strong performance with 12 kills. Senior Katie Wetterer also had a strong all around performance with 10 kills and nine digs. Lewis was paced by Stephanie Sagat's 12 kills, and Sara Debuhr recorded seven solo blocks.
