Bellarmine defeats UW-Parkside to gain GLVC berth LOUISVILLE, Ky (November 8, 2008) -- Bellarmine University defeated the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 3-2 (17-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-12, 15-9) to gain a berth in the upcoming GLVC tournament. In their final home game of the season, the Knights traded sets with the determined Rangers before prevailing by a 6 point margin in the deciding set of the match.

Led by Tami Gleason and Jennifer Johnson, the Rangers got out of the blocks first with a 25-17 win in the initial set as the Knights got off to a slow start.

Bellarmine evened up the match with a hard-fought victory (26-24) in the second set. UW-Parkside returned the favor in the third set, scratching out a close 25-23 win to regain the match lead.

On an afternoon when seniors Katie Wetterer and Katie Willinger were honored for their outstanding careers at Bellarmine University, the Knights would not be denied as they recaptured the momentum and dominated down the stretch winning the final two sets of the match 25-12 and 15-9.

Bellarmine triumphed in this hotly contested match with a concerted team effort. On the offensive side, Emily Beckman (19 kills), Lauren Gosnell (13 kills), and Wetterer (12 kills) provided the power while Caryn Schoeff set up the big hitters with 46 assists.

The defensive efforts were led by Austin Ziegler (15 digs), Kaitlan Harris (13 digs), and Linsey Schmalz (7 blocks). Though slowed by an ankle injury, Willinger contributed 5 kills and 2 blocks to the team performance.

Bellarmine's victory gained the Knights a berth in the GLVC tourney and ensured Wetterer and Willinger at least one more game in their collegiate careers. The Knights (#4 seed in the East) will face the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tritons (#1 seed in the West) at 2:30 pm on November 14 in Romeoville, IL.
