Knights advance to Sweet 16 with 92-83 victory
FINDLAY, Ohio (March 15, 2009)--Bellarmine University defeated Lake Superior State 92-83 today in the semi-finals of the Midwest Region of the men's 2009 NCAA Division II Championship to advance to the Sweet 16.

The Knights, the No. 2 seed will face the top-seeded Findlay Oilers in the regional finals on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Findlay knocked off Southern Indiana 81-59 in the other regional semifinal.

Bellarmine was led by Chartrael Hall, who tied his career high with 27 points, and Justin Benedetti, who set a new career high with 25 points.

Bellarmine led for most of the game and seemed to on the verge of blowing out Lake Superior, but every time Bellarmine would stretch the lead to double digits, the Lakers would make a comeback. Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport said that it wasn't his team letting up, it was just solid play from their opponent.

"When you get outscored 45 to 15 from the 3-point line and you still win, you've done a lot of good things in other facets of the game," Davenport said. "I'm unbelievably proud or our guys."

Despite having personal bests, Hall and Benedetti refused to take any personal credit for the victory. "I have to give all the credit to my teammates," said Benedetti. "They just found me when I was open.

Hall said the entire team has bought into Coach Davenport's team philosophy. "It's not about 'me' scoring, it's about 'us' scoring," he said.

Despite an off night from the 3-point line, the Knights were still able to shoot 62.5 percent from the field. It was from the free throw line, however, where Bellarmine did much of its damage, making 27 or 39 attempts as the Lakers slowed the game in the final minutes by sending the Knights to the line.

In addition to Benedetti and Hall, other scoring leaders for the Knights were Braydon Hobbs, who had 18, and Nick Holmes, who had 11. Bellarmine center Oladapo Fagbenle had a strong game and led with six rebounds.

Bellarmine improved to 26-6 on the season, while Lake Superior State finishes at 22-9.
