Knights lose heartbreaker to Findlay in overtime
FINDLAY, Ohio (March 17, 2009)--The Bellarmine University men's basketball team went into the home gym of the undefeated and No. 1 ranked Findlay Oilers and gave them all they could handle before losing 89-86 in overtime in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional final.

The sold out Croy Gymnasium was electric and the play on the floor was incredible as Bellarmine hit a blistering 57.4 percent from the field and the home team hit at a 53.7 percent clip.

Bellarmine sophomore Justin Benedetti eclipsed his career high for the second game in a row, notching 27 points on 10 of 13 shooting. His performance was overshadowed, however, by Findlay's Josh Bostic, who poured in 37 points hitting 11 of 16 field goals and connected on all 11 of his free throw attempts.

"I couldn't be prouder of a group of guys," said Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport. "The outcome of this game is not going to change that."

The Knights finish the season at 26-7, while Findlay moves on to the Elite 8 with a perfect 33-0 record.

The Knights pushed the Oilers harder than anyone all season, posting the most points of any of Findlay's opponents, and Bellarmine is the only school to take the Oilers to overtime this season.

Even before the game started, fans from both sides gave the arena an air of excitement with spirited chants and the Bellarmine pep band playing.

More than 350 Bellarmine fans loaded four fan buses and made the trip to cheer on the Knights.

"The support this university has given this team was nothing short of incredible," Davenport said. "I wouldn't trade these fans for anyone in the country."

The game was close the entire way and was tied 38-38 at halftime. Both teams scored 38 points in the second half as the score at the end of regulation was 78-78.

It looked for a moment as if the game would go into a second overtime as Benedetti drilled a jumper with just three seconds to go that was originally ruled a 3-pointer, which would have tied it. However, the one official stepped in and ruled the shot a two-pointer.

Down one, the Knights were forced to foul and could not get off a shot after Findlay made both free throws to make the final margin three.

Senior Chartrael Hall had a strong performance in his last game as a Knight, scoring 19, as did sophomore Nick Holmes.

Bellarmine's 26 wins this season marks the most ever by a Bellarmine basketball team.
