No. 20 Denver outduels Knights 12-9
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 29, 2009)--The No. 20 University of Denver got five goals from Mark Matthews as the Pioneers defeated the homestanding Bellarmine Knights 12-9 this afternoon in a Great Western Lacrosse League contest in Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Bellarmine (6-4, 0-2) opened up a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, but Matthews found the back of the net as time expired in the first quarter to trim the lead to 3-2.

Defense took control in the second quarter as neither team scored in the first 10 minutes.

The game was essentially decided in the last five minutes of the second quarter when the Pioneers' offense came alive and scored four goals over a span of just 3:09 to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.

The Pioneers (6-4, 1-0) were able to maintain the lead for the remainder of the game, although the Knights twice cut it to one at 6-5 and again at 7-6.

The Knights were led by Sean Doyle who had three goals and three assists and Derek Hopcroft, who had four goals.

For the Pioneers, Todd Baxter also had a hat trick with three goals.

Statistically the game was pretty even, with 27 ground balls apiece. Bellarmine held a 45-40 edge in shots, but the Knights also committed five more turnovers than the Pioneers.

Denver held a 14-10 advantage in faceoffs, and Bellarmine goalie Scott Bowles recorded 11 saves to seven for Denver's Peter Lowell.

Bellarmine's next action will be on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. when the Knights host The Ohio State University Buckeyes in another GWLL contest.
