Norse slips by Knights 5-4 in men's tennis
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 18, 2009)--The Bellarmine Knights lost a closely-contested men's tennis match 5-4 to Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Northern Kentucky this afternoon at Bellarmin's Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
The match, which was desribed by Bellarmine Coach Todd Murphy, as a "five and a half hour thriller," featured three tie-breakers and one three set singles match.
Bellarmine senior Nic Janssen-Bernard, who was one of three seniors honored prior to the match, won at both No. 2 singles and at No. 1 doubles and was the only Knight to earn victories in both sessions.
"I'm proud of the fight show by my guys," Murphy said. "They played some good tennis, and I was happy to see Nic win on senior day," he added.
"I liked our chances coming out of doubles," Murphy said, "but we struggled with our singles play in some spots. I am looking forward to tomorrow when whe will see an Indy (University of Indianapolis) team much like NKU today."
Bellarmine moves to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in conference. Northern improves to 15-7, 7-2.
