Knights split with NKU to earn GLVC tourney berth
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (April 25, 2009)--The Bellarmine softball team split a doubleheader with the Northern Kentucky University Norse and in so doing wrapped up a berth in next week's Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.
The Knights opened with a 4-2 win over the Norse, but it was all Northern Kentucky in game two as the home team won 11-1 in the nightcap.
In game one the Knights banged out 10 hits with the biggest coming from freshman catcher Jordan Basham, who connected for a two-run homer. Eight of the nine Bellarmine offensive players collected at least one hit, and the one player who went hitless had two successful sacrifices.
Sophomore pitcher Casey Willard had another solid outing, scattering seven hits and allowing no walks in picking up the complete game win. Willard moves to 16-14 with the victory.
GAME 1 BOX SCORE
In game two, Bellarmine could only scratch out three hits offensively, while the homestanding Norse collected 11 runs on 14 hits. The lone Bellarmine highlight was Basham's ninth home run of the season.
GAME 2 BOX SCORE
Bellarmine concludes its regulars season with a 23-29 (11-13 GLVC) record. The Norse are 27-21 overall and 13-11 in conference play.
Bellarmine currently stands seventh in the GLVC standings and have now clinched a spot in the 8-team GLVC Championship Tournament. With one day still remaining, Bellarmine could slip to eighth in a worst case scenario but would stil play in the double elimination tournament to be played next week in East Peoria, Ill. This will mark the first time Bellarmine has earned a spot in the GLVC tournament since 2003.
