Women's tennis team finishes fourth in tourney
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. (Apr. 25, 2009) -- The women's tennis team of Bellarmine University lost a tough match against Northern Kentucky this morning resulting in a fourth place finish for the Knights in the GLVC tournament.
The Knights gave it their all in the third place match with the Norse of NKU, who were seeded #3 in the tourney as well as ranked #34 nationally, but were unable to close the deal in the end.
Bellarmine completed the doubles matches down 1-2 as the team of Sarah Roebker and Elizabeth Bohnert defeated Stephanie Isaacs and Kristen Sunday 9-8 (7-5) for BU's first point of the morning.
The Knights returned to the courts for singles with plenty of fight left in them as they captured victories at the one through three positions.
Rebecca Porter topped Kristen Sunday 6-0, 6-2. Roebker bested Isaacs by a score of 7-5, 6-3. And Bohnert defeated Michelle Schirmann with a tally of 6-2, 6-4.
Bellarmine was unable to get that final needed point as they dropped the other three singles contest, resulting in a 5-4 final score for the overall match.
With the loss, the Knights complete their 2009 campaign with a 14-7 overall record.
Despite losing their final match of the season, Bellarmine can look forward to next year with a great deal of hope as the Knights will return all but one of their six starting singles players.
