Hall hopes to join fellow alums in pro basketball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 11, 2009)--Having just captained the Bellarmine Men's Basketball Team through a season with the most wins in school history, recent graduate Chartrael Hall is pursuing employment as a professional player.

A First Team All-GLVC and All-Midwest Region selection, Hall paved the way for the 08-09 Knights' Sweet-16 berth by leading the team in minutes, points, assists, steals and rebounds. Now that he has walked the stage and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication, he'll aspire to put use of the degree on hold, and earn a paycheck using his basketball skills.

Hall will likely join a handful of other Bellarmine alumni who have opted to take this route. The most seasoned veteran of basketball at this level is 2002 graduate, Jared McCurry--currently ninth on Bellarmine's all-time scoring list at 1,565. McCurry was a true journeyman for his first three seasons after graduation from Bellarmine. He has since found a home of the last four years in the top division in Switzerland. After spending one season with Herens Basket, he has played the last three seasons with the Birstal Starwings Basel. During his time in Switzerland, McCurry has earned a plethora of honors, including 3-time LNA League Top Scorer and 2-time LNA All-Import Team.

More recent graduates still continuing playing careers are from the class of 2006. Matt Miller and Calvin Fowler began their career in England for the Manchester Magic and London Leopards respectively. Since the 06-07 season in England, Miller has gained employment from teams in Bosnia and Germany. He has also competed for Rwanda's National Team in the Cup of African Nations Tournament, which he'll play in again this summer from August 5 to 15 in Libya. While in England, Fowler represented one of Miller's opponents. When the two former teammates faced one another, Miller's Magic defeated Fowler's Leopards. Fowler led all scorers that game with 33 points. He finished the 06-07 season averaging 24.5 points. Even though he has taken time away from the game to pursue other professional opportunities, Fowler is considering returning to London or elsewhere to compete during the 2009-10 season.

Finally, Hall's teammates at Bellarmine during the 2007-08 season, Dzaflo Larkai and Jamie Jackson, have just completed their first year as a professionals. During the 2008-09 season, Larkai played for Torrons Vicens, which competes in the second division in Spain. ‘Flo' is averaging 6.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He has made 60.8 percent of his field goal attempts. Torrons Vicens is currently 19-11 this season with the playoffs beginning late last week. Jackson spent the past season playing for the American Basketball Association's (ABA) Kentucky Bisons. The team plays out of Owensboro, KY, near where Jackson was born and raised. Jackson averaged 16.9 PPG as a starter and co-captain of the team, which won the 2008-09 ABA Championship.

Similar to his fellow alumni, Hall is not quite sure where his ambitions will take him next season. Placement on teams abroad and in the States occurs as late as Mid-August. "I'm proud of the position I've put myself in," Hall said. "I've earned a degree from a highly respected school. Despite whether I continue to play for one year or 10 years, I'm glad I have that piece of paper (diploma). It will help me every day of my life."
