Lakers spoil Knights' home opener with 4-2 victory
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 27, 2009)--Bellarmine University's field hockey team opened its season against the 10th-ranked team in NCAA Div. II, falling 4-2 to the Lakers of Mercyhurst College this afternoon at Owsley Brown Frazier Stadium.

The game, which was delayed some 50 minutes due to lightning in the area, was a scoreless affair until Sara Wowkowych deflected in a pass from Serena Slattery to get the score for the visitors almost 32 minutes into the game.

The goal was the first of a flurry of scoring that included three goals in the openingn period's final three minutes. Mercyhurst tacked on another goal to go up 2-0 just 1:01 after their first score.

The Knights got on the board with just one minute remaining in the first half when Bellarmine sophomore Lauren Schmeing (Louisville, Ky./Assumption H.S.) connected on a penalty corner from fellow sophomore Ellen West (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy), making the halftime score 2-1.

Mercyhurst broke open quickly in the second half as Brittany Coppola got a goal for the Lakers less than a minute into the new period.

The game remained 3-1 for the next 22 minutes until Mercyhurst added a goal in the game's 58th minute to increase their lead to three. Bellarmine ended the scoring with just 16 seconds remaining in the game when Schmeing connected again after receiving a penalty corner.

For the game, Bellarmine (0-1) was outshot by the Lakers (1-0) 18 to eight, and the visitors also held a nine-eight advantage in corners.

Bellarmine's Katie Lange recorded eight saves in goal for the Knights, and Madison Gamez recorded a defensive save.

The Knights will take the field again on Sept. 1, when they travel to Danville to take on the Colonels of Centre College.
