Lacrosse Sneaks By St. John’s to Take Home Opener February 24, 2007, LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine lacrosse coach Jack McGetrick may have a tough time scheduling a home opener next year when the Knights open their new Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Bellarmine continued their undefeated run in home openers today, scoring a dramatic 12-11 victory over visiting St. John’s. The Knights (1-1), who have now won three straight home openers, got the game winner from junior attack Ray Finnegan (Dublin, Ohio) with just two minutes left in the game to get past the Red Storm (0-2) at Trinity High School’s Marshall Field. Sophomore Bruce Tan (Philadelphia, Pa.) assisted on the play.

The score capped an exciting Bellarmine rally. Down 10-8 late in the third, Bellarmine attack Adam Gardner (Toronto, Ontario) got tangled up with St. John’s long stickman, but was able to flip the ball to a streaking Justin Norbraten (Prince George, British Columbia) who blasted a shot past goalkeeper Dave Saccente to make it 10-9 right before the end of the period.

The Knights then scored twice to open the fourth. The first goal was the result of Gardner scooping up a ground ball a few feet in front of the cage and slipping it by Saccente to tie it up 10-10. Three minutes later, Bellarmine defender Dilan Graham (Toronto, Ontario) intercepted a St. John’s pass near the Knights’ goal and quickly got the ball downfield. Finnegan completed the break off a Dylan MacDougal (Oakville, Ontario) feed to put Bellarmine up one, 11-10, with 11:41 left in regulation.

St. John’s scored an equalizer at the nine minute mark when MacDougal sent a pass too high and the ball rolled out to midfield. From there, Red Storm attack Bobby Fitton scooped up the loose ball and rushed all the way to the cage to deposit the game-tying goal. The score remained deadlocked until Finnegan’s late-game heroics.

Junior Adam Gardner (Toronto, Ontario) had four goals and two assists, while Finnegan finished with three goals to lead the Knights. Sophomore Bobby Snider (Calgary, Alberta) was outstanding on face-offs, winning 13 of 23 draws and scooping up 10 ground balls to give the Knights plenty of possessions.

Bellarmine keeper J.C. Hutchens (Westminster, Md.) had 12 saves on the day.
