Lacrosse Team Falls Short At No. 15 North Carolina March 7, 2007, CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Bellarmine lacrosse team cleaned up their game and played solid defense this evening, but still fell to No. 15 North Carolina, 10-6. Bellarmine drops to 1-3 on the season, while North Carolina bounced back from their first lost of the season against Navy to move to 4-1.

Four days after committing a season-high nine penalties against Manhattan, including several costly ones at the end of regulation, Bellarmine was whistled for just two this evening. The Tar Heels also blasted 48 shots on the night, compared to the Knights’ 21, but Bellarmine goalkeeper J.C. Hutchens (Westminster, Md.) turned away a season-high 17 shots to keep it tight.

Bellarmine attack Adam Gardner (Toronto, Ontario) scored twice to lead his squad, including the Knight’s first goal of the game just over four minutes into the contest. In fact, Bellarmine held a slight lead at 2-1 on Dylan MacDougal’s (Oakville, Ontatio) third goal of the season at the 10:40 mark of the first period.

North Carolina chalked up six of the game’s next seven goals, however, and went into the final period up 7-3. Bellarmine would get as close as 8-5 on Ray Finnegan’s (Dublin, Ohio) score with 7:09 left in regulation. North Carolina quickly responded, however, notching a man-up goal just over a minute later, after Adam Lukanchoff (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) was whistled for a penalty.

Bellarmine scooped up 37 ground balls, including a team-high four from Lukanchoff. The Knights were beat on face-offs, 15-5.
