Davenport Hired as Men's Basketball Coach Apr. 29, Louisville, Ky. – Bellarmine University hired Scott Davenport as their 11th head men’s basketball coach. BU Director of Athletics, Scott Wiegandt, made the announcement at a media conference today at Knights Hall.

“We are very excited to welcome Scott to the Bellarmine family,” said Wiegandt. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm about basketball to our department. I know we selected the right coach and we very excited about the future of Bellarmine basketball.”

Davenport comes to Bellarmine after spending the past nine seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville. With Davenport on staff, the Cardinals were 185-106 and made six trips to the NCAA Tournament, including this past season’s Final Four appearance. While there, Davenport worked under both Rick Pitino and Denny Crum, and assisted in all facets of the program, including game preparation, individual instruction, scheduling, and recruiting. He was also director of the program’s summer youth camps.

Before going to Louisville, Davenport spent 10 seasons as the head boy’s coach at Ballard High School. He led the team to a State Championship in 1988 and a Runner-up finish in 1987, while compiling a 268-59 record there. Forty-one of his fifty-five seniors at Ballard went on to play college basketball, and two of his stand-outs, DeJuan Wheat and Allan Houston, made it to the NBA after stellar careers at the University of Louisville and the University of Tennessee respectively. His squads also took out five regional championships.

Prior to coaching at Ballard, Davenport spent a season under Mike Polio at Virginia Commonwealth University on a staff that also included assistant coaches Tubby Smith, now the head coach at Kentucky, and Ray Harper, now the head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan. He was also a graduate assistant at the University of Louisville during the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons.

In addition to those coaching stints, Davenport was one of 12 coaches selected from across the nation to work at the Nike All-America Camp from 1989-95. He was also a 1986 Kentucky Derby Festival McDonald’s All-Star Game Coach and was chosen as Assistant Coach for the 1983 Kentucky/Indiana All-Star game.

Davenport replaces Chris Pullem, who resigned at the end of this past season. The Knights finished the year with a 9-18 record, including a 4-16 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. However, the team lost just two seniors this year, including one starter, while returns Honorable Mention All-Conference players Marcus Flynn (New Albany, Ind.) and Matt Pait (Jeffersonville, Ind.) next season.
