BU Stopped by No. 19 Notre Dame in GWLL Opener
March 20, 2007, SOUTH BEND, Ind. Ė The Bellarmine lacrosse team had a rude welcome to the Great Western Lacrosse League today. Playing in their first-ever contest as a member of the conference, the Knights fell to No. 19 Notre Dame, 11-3.
Bellarmine (1-5, 0-1) scored first on a goal inside the circle by Adam Gardner (Toronto, Ontario) just over 11 minutes into the game, off a Jamie Floris (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) assist. The Knights would not score again, however, for over thirty minutes. In between, the Fighting Irish (4-3, 1-0) reeled off eight straight goals to take a commanding lead.
Junior middie John Kirk (Massepequa Park, N.Y.) finally broke the spell, scoring an unassisted goal with four minutes left in the third. Sophomore Mike Rosenburgh (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) recorded his first collegiate goal for Bellarmine in the fourth period as both teams emptied their benches. Freshman Andrew Wolford (Columbus, Ohio) assisted on the play, notching his first point as a Knight.
J.C. Hutchins (Westminster, Md.) started in goal, saving three shots while conceding six goals. He was replaced in the second half by David Haas (Novi, Mich.), who gave up five scores, while stopping three shots. Freshman A.J. Smith (Urbana, Md.) finished up in the cage and did not allow a score.
