Bellarmine Snaps Skid With 12-8 Win Over Wagner April 3, 2007, STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Bellarmine lacrosse team snapped a six-game losing streak today by topping Wagner 12-8. The Knights (2-7) fought back from early deficits of 3-0 and 5-4 to collect the victory. Bellarmine scored five unanswered goals by five different players in the third period to take command of the game. The Seahawks remain winless on the year at 0-9.

Bellarmine attack Ray Finnegan (Dublin, Ohio) and midfielder Bryan Brown (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each scored two goals and assisted on another. Bellarmine’s leading goal scorer this season, Adam Gardner (Toronto, Ontario), also tallied a pair of goals.

Wagner shutout Bellarmine in the first period and notched three goals to take an early lead. Bellarmine answered in the second period, finally getting on the board with Derek Hopcroft’s (Toronto, Ontario) third goal of the season, just one and a half minutes into the period. The score sparked four straight from the Knights, Finnegan, Justin Norbraten (Prince George, British Columbia), and Brown all found the back of the cage. Brown’s goal with five minutes left in the half gave the Knights their first lead, 4-3.

The Seahawks evened things up right before the break, however, as Brian Poissant scored with less than two minutes left on the clock. Poissant then fed Jeff Policicchio at the start of the second half to put the home team back on top, 5-4.

From that point forward, it was all Bellarmine.

Gardner scored the equalizer with 8:21 left in the third period off a Hopcroft pass and big middie John Kirk (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) delivered the go-ahead score with 4:22. Bellarmine then rattled off three goals in less than a minute as Bobby Snider (Calgary, Alberta) won back-to-back draws. Finnegan scored the first than assisted on the second by Brown while Matt Holland (Victoria, British Columbia) closed the door with the third goal to make it 9-5.

Wagner would close the gap to 9-6 early in the fourth, but Bellarmine scored three more lightening quick goals within a one-minute stretch midway through the period to go up 12-6 and put the game out of reach.

Snider finished his day winning 12 of 20 faceoffs and collecting a team-high nine ground balls.

Bellarmine pelted Wagner with a season-high 26 shots on goal and 42 total.

Goalkeeper J.C. Hutchins (Westminster, Md.) collected his second win of the season by saving 12 shots.

Bellarmine now returns home from their difficult six-game road swing by hosting Great Western Lacrosse League rival Ohio State this Saturday at Trinity High School. The first faceoff is scheduled for 1 pm.
