Slow Start Hurts Knights As They Fall to Ohio St. April 7, 2007, LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine lacrosse team dropped a 13-9 decision against Great Western Lacrosse League foe Ohio State today in the team’s first home game in over a month. The Knights (2-8, 0-2), who were playing their first ever home game as a member of the GWLL, nearly overcame a terrible start, but could never take the lead in the contest.

Instead, the Buckeyes (6-4, 2-0) scored the first five goals of the game, then held off a Bellarmine rally in which the Knights drew to 7-6 early in the second half, to collect the win.

Bellarmine was led by junior Ray Finnegan (Dublin, Ohio), who notched his third hat-trick of the season by scoring three goals. Junior John Kirk (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) added a pair of goals, while Jamie Floris (Niagara on the Lake, Ontario) scored once and assisted on two others.

The Buckeyes scored often and quickly to start the game. With less than ten minutes having run off the clock, Ohio State held a comfortable 5-0 lead. Senior midfielder Bryan Brown (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) finally ended the Knight drought, scoring with 2:23 left in the period.

Ohio State went up 6-1 early in the second period off a Mario Ventiquattro goal and appeared poised to blow out Bellarmine. Kirk started a string of Bellarmine scores, however, with a pretty spin move from the left wing with just over 10 minutes left in the half. One minute later, Justin Norbraten (Prince George, British Columbia) fired from nearly the same spot, this time going underneath the defense. His submarine goal pulled the Knights to within 6-3.

Ohio State would counter, but Bellarmine would tally the next three scores to close the gap to one. The first of those scores came with four minutes left in the first half when Chase Williams (Vancouver, British Columbia) fed Floris from behind the cage. Floris’ catch-and-shoot allowed the Knights to go into the locker room down 7-4.

In the second half, Finnegan gave the Knights new life by first weaving his way through traffic for a score less than a minute into the period, then striking again 45 seconds later by finishing off a Bellarmine fast break.

That would be all the closer Bellarmine would get. Ohio State tallied six of the games’ next seven goals to put the contest out of reach. Bellarmine tacked on two late game goals by Williams, his first of the season, and Finnegan, which made the final scoreline more respectable.

Bellarmine was out-shot 38-28. Face-off man Bobby Snider (Calgary, Alberta) helped the Knights take 15 of the game’s 25 draws. J.C. Hutchins (Westminster, Md.), meanwhile, stopped eight shots on the day.

Bellarmine will host a tough doubleheader next weekend. Denver comes to town Friday night for the Knights’ first ever game under the lights. That contest starts at 7:00. Bellarmine will then face the Air Force Academy on Sunday.
