Knights Collect Historic GWLL Win Over Air Force April 15, 2007, LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine lacrosse team won the program’s first-ever Great Western Lacrosse League contest today, besting the Air Force Academy, 16-10. The Knights (3-9, 1-3) scored quickly and often as their 16-goal haul was the team’s highest scoring output in two seasons. The game was also the highest scoring in the GWLL this year.

Playing their second straight game without leading scorer Ray Finnegan (Dublin, Ohio), Bellarmine got a big effort from freshman attack Dylan MacDougal (Oakville, Ontario), who finished with a career-high three goals and assisted on another. Midfielder John Kirk (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) also registered a hat-trick, notching three goals.

Goalkeeper J.C. Hutchins (Westminster, Md.) stopped a season-high 20 shots, the second most in a game in Bellarmine’s three-year history.

Despite Hutchins’ success in the cage, both teams wasted little time showing off their offensive prowess. The Knights got on the board first just over a minute into the game on a Bryan Brown (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) goal. Air Force (2-7, 1-2) responded with a Justin Kuchta tally two minutes later.

Bellarmine rattled off three of the game’s next four goals to take an early 4-2 lead before Air Force scored with five minutes left in the first to draw within one, 4-3. Bellarmine’s Mike Rosenbergh (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scored his second goal of the season right before the end of the first period, which ignited a Bellarmine onslaught.

The Knights dominated the second period, scoring six straight goals to take a comfortable 11-3 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Falcons fought back, scoring three straight to cut the lead to 11-6. Midway through the third period, though, MacDougal scored his second goal of the game, as he stretched high to collect a pretty pass from Justin Norbraten (Prince George, British Columbia), then dropped it under Air Force goalkeeper Daniel Bellissimo to get Bellarmine back on track.

Up 12-6, the Knights maintained a five- or six-goal lead the rest of the way as both teams essentially traded scores.

Bobby Snider (Calgary, Alberta) won 15 of 27 face-offs for the Knights, taking one in for a score himself in the second period. He also scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls.

The Air Force held the edge in shots, 50-39, while Bellarmine took 37 ground balls to Air Force’s 34. Bellarmine also killed seven of nine penalties.

The Knights wrap up their 2007 campaign next Saturday with a home game against GWLL foe Quinnipiac. That contest starts at 1 pm at Trinity High.
