Registration ready: tips for lining up the best classes for spring semester

college life

It’s that time of the semester again; it’s almost time for registration. The whirlwind week of midterms have come and gone, but now we have the hectic weeks ahead of planning and manipulating our proposed schedules for the spring. What a fun time that always is.

My name is Katelyn Norris and I am a senior communication major with a writing minor. I am Vice President of Public Relations on Student Government Association and I am on Leadership Team for Pioneer Scholars. I also write for the online student news publication Knights Media Network. I assist students in my role as an Academic Peer Coach and as a Student Success Assistant.

Registration can be nerve-wracking. Each class has a designated day for registration. On those days the class is split up and grouped into different times of day to register for classes.

It’s important to remember the exact time and day you register. Classes fill up quickly, and if you miss your scheduled time you risk losing your spot in the class. Unfortunately, I’ve had it happen far too many times.

The course schedule for the spring semester is already available and I suggest adding classes to your spring plans asap. Don’t forget to include a few back-up classes in case some of your preferred courses fill up.

During the time leading up to registration, we all need to meet with our advisors. Our advisors are here to guide us and make sure that we are on track for our major. Be sure to schedule a meeting with your advisor before your registration time. Give yourself enough time before your scheduled day to register just in case you need to change anything. If you change your schedule last minute that is always tricky.

If you’re not sure who your advisor is, you can find out through self-service on your student dashboard. From there you will go to Student Planning and click go to Plan & Schedule. From there click the advising tab and your advisor will be listed there.

You can make appointments via Beacon if your advisor is in the Student Success Center and via email if they are within your major department. They should all be reaching out to students soon, so keep an eye out for their email.

Below are the registration dates:

  • Nov. 2 – Advanced registration for graduate and post-baccalaureate students who qualify by policy
  • Nov. 3 – Advanced registration for seniors who qualify by policy (within 3 hours of 90 earned credits) and graduate and post-baccalaureate students
  • Nov. 4 – Registration for seniors (within 3 hours of 90 earned credits)
  • Nov. 5 – Advanced registration for junior, sophomore, and first-year students who qualify by policy
  • Nov. 9 – Registration for juniors (within 3 hours of 60 earned credits)
  • Nov. 11 – Registration for sophomores (within 3 hours of 30 earned credits)
  • Nov. 13 – Registration for first-year students (less than 27 earned credits)
  • Nov. 16 – Non-degree student registration opens

Be sure to get a head start on your spring schedule now! Schedule an appointment with your advisor for the upcoming week and happy spring planning, Knights!
