  • Abby Cocanaugher '07 (Violin Performance) completed her graduate study at Florida State University in the Visual Disabilities Master's Program with a concentration in Rehabilitation Teaching for the Blind.
  • Shawn Trail '02 (Percussion Performance and Music Technology) completed his Fulbright at the Medialogy Institute, Aalborg University Copenhagen, Denmark and is currently with Pat Metheny and his Orchestrion Tour.
  • Rob Collier '02 (Music Technology) completed his DMA in Composition at the University of Maryland.

  • Kathy Karr, Instructor of Flute, travelled to Jerusalem where she performed recitals and conducted master-classes by invitation in Naharya, Kabutz, Tel-Aviv at Tel-Aviv University, and in Akko at the Akko Conservatory of Music.
  • Marilyn Nije, Instructor of Clarinet, performed with the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra for the Summer Concert Series.

  • Barry Lawrence, Instructor of Voice, was named chair of the Vocal Music Discipline of the Kentucky Governors School of the Arts.
  • Stephen Mattingly, Instructor of Guitar made his Carnegie Hall debut performing with the Tantalus Quartet including a world premiere of a composition written for the quartet by Grammy-nominated composer Apostolos Paraskevas.
  • Brian Powell, Instructor of Double Bass, received the Jefferson County Music Teacher of the Year Award. He teaches music and orchestra at Eastern High School.
March 2009
  • Richard Burchard, Associate Professor of Music, had the world premier of his composition Song of Eternal Love performed in the Chamber Music Hall of the Oficina Municipal de Congresos of Oviedo, Spain with additional performances in the Cathedral of Leon; Iglesia San Juan de los Caballeros,Segovia; the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostella and the Estrela Basilica, Portugal.
  • Richard Burchard, Associate Professor of Music, had his composition Miserere Mei, performed in Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, as part of the Manhattan Concert Production Series.
  • Ben Short ‘08 (Jazz Bass) was accepted to the University of Louisville to pursue the Master of Music degree in Music Theory.
  • Meme Tunnell, Assistant Professor of Music, was appointed to Board of the Kentucky Music Teachers Association.

  • Christina Bouras-Recktenwald, Instructor of Voice performed the roll of Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme with the Chattanooga Opera.
  • Shawn Trail '02 (Percussion Performance and Music Technology) received a Fulbright Grant to conduct research at the Medialogy Institute, Aalborg University Copenhagen, Denmark for 2009 – 2010 to design and develop electro-acoustic, midi-extended marimba and respective hardware/software interface.  
  • Nick Bryan '09 (Music Technology and Jazz Studies) was accepted to New York University to pursue the Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies.
  • Music Technology students Carter Gross ‘10, Walter Kaelin ‘09, Michael Montgomery ‘10, Caroline Petrik ‘10, Craig Satterley ‘10, Sean Sullivan ‘11, and 2008 alum, Ben Short (Jazz Bass) were accepted into the KIIS five-week summer study abroad program in Salzburg, Austria.
  • Dr. A.T. Simpson, Associate Professor of Music, organized the Black History Month Music Events featuring various artists including The Black Classical Artists of Louisville, of which he is founder.

  • Sean Campbell ‘09 (Music Technology) returned from a full semester abroad at the University of Helsinki.   
  • Music Technology students Caroline Petrik ‘10 and Gilbert Wang ‘10 were selected as violinists in Kentucky's Intercollegiate All-State Orchestra.

  • Richard Burchard, Associate Professor of Music, received a Bellarmine University QEP Grant to research the feasibility of developing a service-learning project in Bamako, Mali, West Africa.
  • Richard Burchard, Associate Professor of Music, had his composition Miserere Mei, published by Gentry Music in Los Angeles under the Bruce Rogers Choral Series, Hal Leonard, distributor.
  • Stephen Mattingly, Instructor of Guitar performed a world premiere of a commissioned concerto for guitar quartet with the Albany Symphony in Albany, Georgia.
  • Meme Tunnell, Assistant Professor of Music, served as Clinician/Adjudicator for the Sonatina Tournament at Western Kentucky University.

  • Richard Burchard, Associate Professor of Music, had two world premiers performed at the 2008 KMTA state conference at Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, KY. Lord God of this Great Night and Kyrie from In Paradisum were performed marking the end of his appointment as the 2008 KMTA Commissioned Composer.
  • Karen Lord-Powell, Instructor of Violin and Viola was appointed Principal 2nd Violin of the Louisville Orchestra.
September 2008
  • David George, Instructor of Piano was the Production Assistant for American Idol Louisville and the pianist for the closing ceremonies of the Ryder Cup.
  • Stephen Mattingly, Instructor of Guitar received rave reviews for the CD release of Schubert songs in Classical Guitar Magazine published in the UK.
July 2008
  • Stephen Mattingly, Instructor of Guitar was a featured concert artist at the Guitar Foundation of America Convention in Ithaca, New York. Mr Mattingly was also promoted to Convention Manager with the Guitar Foundation of America.
  • Meme Tunnell, Assistant Professor of Music, was a guest lecturer at the Governor’s School for the Arts at Transylvania University.
June 2008
  • Richard Burchard, Associate Professor of Music, taught two courses in Salzburg, Austria for the Kentucky Institute for International Studies.
  • Richard Burchard, Associate Professor of Music, had the world premier of his composition Be Not Afraid performed in the Dome Cathedral in Salzburg, Austria. Other performances took place at Maria Hilfekirche and the Franciskanerkirche.
  • Kim Harris, Instructor of Strings, purchased Notable Beginnings Music School which serves the community with music lessons for people of all ages.
  • Jeff Sherman, Instructor of Jazz Guitar, conducted the annual Bellarmine University Jazz Guitar Clinic which attracts students and musicians from around the region.
  • Dr. A.T. Simpson, Associate Professor of Music, served as the Choral Director for the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts and served yearlong as the organization’s Statewide Clinician.
  • Meme Tunnell, Assistant Professor of Music, was awarded the Permanent Professional Certification in Collegiate Level Piano Teaching by the Music Teachers National Association.

  • 11. 19. 07 Burchard Composition has World Premier
  • Two compositions by Richard Burchard were featured in a concert of choral music. Miserere Mei and the World Premier of Angels Cry for Mercy were performed by Voces Novae, Frank A. Heller, III, director in Awakenings: Unfolding in the Present. The concert took place Sunday, November 18 at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, 421 South Second Street.

  • 7. 15. 07 Burchard Named as KMTA 2008 Commissioned Composer - Congratulations to Richard Burchard upon his selection by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association to write a commissioned work for performance at its 2008 conference. Following the premiere performance of the composition, it will be submitted to a distinguished panel of recognized composers who will select the Music Teachers National Association Shepherd Distinguished Composer of the Year from all of the 2008 state commissioned works produced throughout the United States. The winning composition is presented in a concert performance at the MTNA National Conference.
  • 6.2.07 The Annual Bellarmine Guitar Clinic to take place - Bellarmine University and Jazz Guitar Instructor Jeff Sherman have announced the 21st Annual Bellarmine Jazz Guitar Clinic and Concert will be held June 4 and 5. The clinic and concert will feature instruction and performances by Sherman and special guests Jack Wilkins and John Stowell. For more information click here.

  • 6.01.07 Music Students travel to Salzburg Austria for 5 weeks of music study - There were six Bellarmine students that participated in the KIIS (Kentucky Institute for International Studies) Salzburg, Austria Program. Those students were Cassandra Abram, Anna Ament, Ben Aguilar, Sean Campbell, Rebecca Clark and Sarah Clark.

  • 2.7.07 Composer Richard Burchard to have pieces for string orchestra premiered - On Friday, February 16, The Mercury Ensemble of Denver, CO, Thomas Blomster, conductor, will perform the world premier of Richard Burchard's Lament for Strings in a concert of music to take place at Bear Creek Church, 3101 South Kipling Street in Denver. The ensemble will also perform Burchard's transcription of his 5-part choral setting of O Magnum Mysterium.
  • 1.15.07 Senior Bart Mattingly Receives Top Prize - Senior Music Major Bart Mattingly has been selected as the winner of the Kentucky Music Educator's Association Collegiate Composition Competition. His winning composition is a 5-part Choral Composition on the text O Magnum Mysterium. The prize includes a $250 monetary award, a certificate and an invitation to have his work performed at the 2007 KMEA In-service Conference.
  • The competition is held every year and is open to all students of music at all Kentucky Colleges and Universities. This is the first year a Bellarmine Music Student submitted a composition. Congratulations to Bart and his fine work!
  • 12.15.06 Congratulations December Graduates -Congratulations to Rachel Buse and Pat Comley as they received their respective diplomas at last night's commencement exercise. Rachel was awarded a double degree in Music Technology and Communications. Pat was awarded a double degree in Music Technology and Psychology.
