The Theory and Composition degree at Bellarmine University is designed for students who demonstrate a creative ability in writing and arranging music or who have a strong interest in its theoretical aspects. Students who complete a degree in this field typically pursue careers as composers, arrangers, theory or composition teachers, film composers, commercial orchestrators, or transcribers.
Students are engaged in a variety of Music Theory courses and study composition with an assigned member of the composition faculty. The program's flexibility allows students to develop their own compositional style.
Studies in instrumental, choral, historical and electronic music are incorporated into the Theory and Composition Degree Program. Each student must own a MacBook and purchase specific software during the four-year program. The Music Department’s Music Technology Lab houses six iMacs for student use as well.
Students will participate in Composition Workshops, Student Composition recitals where they have the opportunity to have their works performed. Monthly forums introduce majors to the economic, legal, and professional sides of life as an active composer, as well as provide an opportunity to meet active visiting composers.
