Mastering Reading Skills ***NEW*** Mastering reading skills will make reading more enjoyable for you and greatly increase your confidence in school. Through fun, engaging activities, you will learn and practice: word-attack skills, sight vocabulary, reading with expression, and comprehension skills. To help you improve your silent reading skills and become a more fluid reader, you’ll spend at least a half hour each day engaged in the award-winning computer program Lexia Learning®. You can continue to utilize the computer program at home through August 15.

Boost Your Reading Speed ***NEW*** Ever wish you could read faster? Get through your homework in half the time? Learn the secrets to fast AND effective reading. By utilizing these techniques, your reading speed (with comprehension) will double or even triple! Please note – this technique has not been effective with students with certain learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. Detective Camp Ever wonder how clues are used to solve crimes? How fingerprints are different? Or what’s special about DNA? If so, then come discover how to lift fingerprints, analyze hair and fibers, separate inks, and isolate DNA. Gain hands-on experience analyzing evidence using forensic science tools and techniques to solve a “crime.” What fun! INSTRUCTOR: Joann Lau, Ph.D. is a Biology instructor at Bellarmine University. Energy Wizards As a wizard in training, you will be bouncing, bending and breaking light. And…you’ll construct magical devices such as a Kaleidoscope, a Thaumatrope, and a Zoetrope. Explore how your eye really sees objects and color as you learn some illusions to mystify your friends. Find out if it really makes a difference what color clothes you wear in the summer as you delve into mysteries about the sun’s radiation. Have fun learning the fundamentals of light physics! Cartooning Fun Do you like to doodle? You may have hidden talent! In this fun camp you’ll explore how cartoonists draw and create comic books. You’ll develop your own ‘tooner’ skills, including story boarding and character development. Learn about perspective and the basic proportions of the human face and body. Discover how to ink your pencil sketches and reproduce your own work. What fun! INSTRUCTOR: Ted Nathanson is an artist who creates books, comics, paintings, and drawings. He teaches art classes all over the country and is a member of the Louisville Cartoonist Society. Center Stage: Drama Plus Would you like to be in the spotlight? Learn lines, rehearse movements, and create characters on the way to producing a short play. Help put together simple props and costumes. Invite your friends and family to see the finished product on Friday! This exciting camp introduces you to basic acting skills while you have all the fun of performing onstage. Art Meets Story ***NEW*** Enter the fun and creative realm of making art to match a story and storytelling from art and objects. Come play and learn by making up narratives with art projects and improvisation. We’ll have a Liar’s Contest, create stories with simple drawings, and maybe spin a few ghostly tales too. INSTRUCTOR: Thomas Freese, MA, is a professional storyteller and artist. He has performed from Ashland to Argentina, telling tales from his twenty story programs. Rock Guitar Are you ready to rock? In this beginning-level camp, you’ll learn power cords and the basics on “rocking out.” You’ll also learn how to read music; how to string, tune, and repair the guitar; how to understand the theory behind the music; how to listen to the musicians around you; and how best to achieve your personal goals as a guitarist. INSTRUCTOR: Jeff Thomas, a proficient guitarist, has played with several local groups over the last 6 years and recorded a full-length album with one of the bands. Comedy Improv Camp ***NEW*** In this highly-interactive camp, you’ll have fun learning the basics of comic acting without a script. Improv, which is a great foundation for any kind of performing, will boost your confidence in front of a group. Four mornings you’ll learn and practice improv skills, such as character creation and interacting with the audience. Then on Friday, you’ll give a performance for your friends and family—just like on TV's Whose Line Is It, Anyway? We’ll show you the funny at Comedy Improv Camp! Building Virtual Worlds ***NEW*** Would you like to create your own 3D world that you control? Perhaps you would enjoy the challenge of building the perfect space outpost, developing an Egyptian adventure or even making dragons roam the skies! You’ll explore the basics of 3D programming as you build 3D worlds that can be used for digital storytelling or simple video games. The only limit is your imagination! INSTRUCTOR: Robert Kelley, Ph.D. is a Post-Doctoral Associate at the University of Louisville and an adjunct Instructor in the Computer Science Department at Bellarmine University. G3 – Great Gains in Geometry Dominoes, Pentominoes, Hexominoes, oh my! Learning geometric concepts can be “way cool” and fun. We’ll build towers with toothpicks and marshmallows, design rectangles with a limited number of cubes, and create colorful origami and artistic tessellations. Discover that hands-on activities can transform difficult geometry concepts into everyday skills. INSTRUCTOR: Lisa L. A2 - Awesome Algebra If you think algebra is “boring,” you obviously haven’t used chip boards, algebra tiles, and power trains to understand it. Discover that learning algebra CAN be totally awesome! Building balconies with rulers and pennies, using jolly ranchers to grasp properties and order of operations, and modeling equations with algebra tiles are a few user-friendly keys we’ll use to understand hard-core algebraic concepts. Write On! Bring your imagination, and we’ll provide the skills that are so important in becoming an effective writer. Through a series of fun activities and experiments, you’ll create vivid descriptions and write some poetry, a personal narrative, an advertisement for a product you create and a response to a work of literature. Short Story Showdown Are you the next J.K. Rowling? Develop the skills you’ll need to author a fascinating short story. Brainstorm plot ideas with your fellow campers, create and develop vivacious characters and settings, and make your story come to life with illustrations. Your finished product will be bound into a book that can be enjoyed for years to come! Movie Magic This computer-based course will help junior movie-makers translate creative ideas onto the screen. You’ll explore how to take better pictures, learn how to download pictures onto a computer, and critique each other’s photos during class. Then you’ll incorporate those pictures into a movie using all the features of Movie Maker software. You’ll learn how to edit your pictures into a continuous slideshow, adding graphics, music, and text. PSAT/SAT Prep Camp Learn the skills you need to earn high scores on the PSAT or SAT tests. You’ll discover the solution logic behind every question from a past test and learn a high-scoring format for the essay section. Gain tips on how to work effectively and efficiently within the defined time allotments of the tests. Duke TIP Prep Camp Each year the top 5% of all 7th grade students is invited to take the SAT to qualify as Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program) Scholars. If you are an accelerated learner who is in the top 5% of your class, come learn the skills you need to do your best on this challenging test.
