Career Development: Questions to Consider when graduating in a tough economy
Students should consider the following steps in making these important decisions:
Work with the Career Center to develop an action plan
Find out who is hiring currently -- Federal employment remains strong
Determine your willingness to relocate – if you will only work in one location your opportunities will be more limited.
Evaluate your marketability based on your major, GPA, related experience and skill sets by comparing them to current job listings
Develop a contact list to include people you know in fields of interest to you or working for a potential employer of interest to you
Take advantage of opportunities in interview or meet with employers who are on campus to interview or attending a job fair
Investigate the employment projections for the fields in which you are considering gaining a graduate degree to prepare yourself before committing to a program
Motivate yourself to develop excellent follow-through on your search methods
Be prepared when you get an interview or networking opportunity – you often get only one initial opportunity
Remain flexible and open to new ideas
“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing.”
