Commuters: Getting Fueled Up for Finals

 Look for the following signs:

  • Skipping classes or not driving to campus at all
  • Sleeping more than usual
  • Aloof or dismissive in regards to conversation
  • No time allotted for studying
  • Begins discussing whether college is “right” for them

If you notice these telltale signs, it is important that you have a conversation with your student.  Find out what is going on and be prepared to listen.  Perhaps it is a perfect time to leave a note of encouragement or offer a kind gesture to refuel your student.  Help commuters see that the semester is quickly approaching an end and that for the past two months they have been successful.  As finals approach consider doing something special for commuters.  Cook them breakfast, give them a gas card to “fill up their tank” (figuratively and literally), give your son or daughter a hug, whatever it may be, remind them that you are supportive and understand all of the many responsibilities they have.
