Immunology
The field of microbiology is a vast one. It includes many specific careers. When searching the web for information, I came across the field of Bacteriology. This struck me as interesting because we have spent the majority of the semester discussing bacteria. A bacteriologists job description is basically to study the affects of bacteria on living organisms. This is an extremely important job because bacteria are responsible for causing many harmful diseases.
One career in the field of bacteriology is Immunology. The job of the immunologist is to research different types of bacteria (along with other disease causing organisms) and then tries to create vaccines, antibodies or other forms of disease prevention. Immunologists work at many different places, They can be employed at hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and lots of other industries whose goal is healthcare.
One of the categories of people most needing the help of immunologists is children. Children spend most of their days in schools surrounded by tons of other disease carrying children. This is a very quick way for a "bug" to be spread. That is why it is important for immunologist to ensure the children are made to receive a vaccine to a common illness as quickly as possible. Or to make sure that if it is a child gets a bacterial infection, that the childs parent realizes that it is necessary for the child take all if his medicine, or the illness will mutate and then can easily be spread fromchild to child and will be untreatable with the original antibody.
These are just a few of the different concerns and occupations of Immunologists. There are many others having to do with viruses, bacteria and other of todays most common reasons for illness. Candace Craddock
