Project Topics from the past
Here are some projects groups have done in previous semesters. I hope these will spark your imaginations as you plan your own projects.
PROJECT 1: Comparing Two Quantities
- People's height versus weight (DON'T do this one. I am really tired of it.)
- Price of a magazine versus the number of pages
- Mileage of a car versus its age
- Air temperature versus relative humidity
- Closing values for AMEX versus Dow Jones
- Cost of an airline ticket versus miles of the flight
- Playing time for a Bellarmine women basketball player versus points scored
- Per capita income versus life expectancy in various countries
PROJECT 2: Estimating a Mean
- Average number of siblings a Bellarmine student has
- Average length of time it takes a female Bellarmine dorm student to get ready in the morning
- Average amount of cash carried by employees at (one of the student's workplace)
- Average number of pairs of tennis shoes owned by Bellarmine dorm students
- Average number of miles on a Bellarmine student's car
- Average number of emails in a student's Inbox
- Average E.R.A. of major league baseball pitchers
PROJECT 3: Testing a Hypothesis
- Bellarmine dorm students spend more than $30 weekly at restaurants.
- Male Bellarmine students in Newman Hall prefer Bud Light over Miller Lite.
- Average out-of-state tuition for universities in California is greater than $5000.
- Bellarmine dorm students spend more than $200 on spring break.
- Bellarmine women have an average shoe size greater than 7.5.
- The average N.B.A. player is more than 76 inches tall.
Here are a couple suggestions as you plan Projects 2 and 3:
- Be careful about the population you pick. With a large population, such as all residents of Louisville, it will be hard to get a truly random sample. For these projects it is better to think small.
- Plan your sampling method ahead of time.
