MATH 305 Project Instructions, Spring 2010

By now, you should be familiar with the structure of the chapters in our text: opening activities that explore the concepts, written discussion that develops the concepts, and closing exercises that assess understanding of the concepts. Your project is to write a mini-chapter in this format.  Here are some specifics:

Outstanding
(45-50 points)

A topic is chosen and approved in advance.
The activities lead the student to a grasp of the important issues of this topic.
The activities are clearly written and easy to follow.
The discussion uses the activities to explain the topic.
The discussion includes a theorem on this topic and gives a clear, correct proof.
The discussion is well organized, with introduction and conclusion.
Figures are integrated into the discussion.
The exercises involve major concepts or applications of the topic.
Sources are properly cited.
The project uses correct grammar, spelling, and mathematical notation.
Two copies are submitted.

Good
(38-44 points)

A topic is chosen and approved in advance.
The activities deal with the important issues of this topic.
The activities are generally clear or present only minor difficulties when following.
The discussion explains how the activities relate to the topic.
The discussion includes a theorem on this topic and gives a correct proof.
The discussion lacks some organization.
Figures are included in the discussion.
The exercises are directly related to the topic.
Sources are given.
There are only minor difficulties with grammar, spelling, or notation.
Two copies are submitted.

Minimal
(25-37 points)

A topic is chosen.
The activities deal with issues related to this topic.
The activities are not clearly written or are difficult to follow.
The discussion does not include the activities.
The discussion includes a theorem on this topic and gives a proof.
The discussion is poorly organized.
No figures are included.
The exercises are related to the topic.
No sources are given.
There are significant difficulties with grammar, spelling, or notation.
Only one copy is submitted.
