GUIDELINES FOR THIRD PAPER

MATH 450

Due Thursday March 2

This paper is to present some aspect of the history of mathematics. One approach could be to choose a topic and trace its development over time. This could include major discoveries and theorems, important people involved, motivations for the development of the topic from outside mathematics, or significant applications of the topic. Another approach to the paper could be to present an historical topic from mathematics. This could include mathematical concepts underlying the topic, mathematical and historical context for the topic, influences from outside mathematics, or important developments arising from the topic.

 

Here are some guidelines as you work on this paper.

 

The paper (50 points)

a.  The mathematics is correct and clearly explained.

b.  The mathematical notation is used accurately.

c.  The paper is well organized, with a clear introduction and conclusion.

d.  The paper uses an appropriate writing style, that is, it should be written for an audience of your peers (college seniors in mathematics). A conversational style is best, but you should avoid slang.

e.  The paper uses correct grammar and spelling.

f.  Sources are properly cited within the paper.

g.  The paper is at least 3 and at most 5 pages long, double-spaced in 12 pt. font.

h.  Two copies are submitted.

  

The presentation (25 points)

a.  The presentation relates the topic to the audience.

b. The mathematics is correct and clearly explained.

c. The mathematical notation is used accurately.

d. The presentation has a clear introduction and conclusion.

e.  The time requirement of 8-10 minutes is met.
