Exchange Program Student (J-1 Visa) Steps

  1. Student Responsibility – You apply to your home institution, provide all information, and are accepted. Note: Please allot plenty of time for this step. It can take 90 days or more.
  2. Bellarmine Responsibility – Bellarmine International Services reviews your documents for eligibility:
  • Funding
  • Academic equivalence
  • Supporting  documents
  1. Bellarmine Responsibility – International Services produces the DS-2019 and mails it with pre-arrival information to the you via an international courier service (Pre-arrival Checklist)
  2. Student Responsibility – You receive the DS-2019, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee, and schedule a visa appointment with the local U.S. Embassy/Consulate (check with the U.S. Embassy /Consulate for detailed information on the application process and time constraints)
  3. Student Responsibility – Appear in person at the Embassy/Consulate, interview, and wait to get visa (check with local U.S. Embassy/Consulate for wait times)
  4. Arrival/Check-In – Travel to the U.S. and enter up to 30 days before the start of the program. Carry all the documents needed 
  5. Arrival/Check-In – Arrive on BU campus and check-in with the Responsible Officer (RO) within 30 days of program start date. This allows BU to verify your arrival with the U.S. government
