Professor Gabriele W. Bosley

Gabriele completed her undergraduate work in Germany in the Humanities, followed by graduate and post graduate degrees in Foreign Language Education/ESL and German Studies from the University of Paderborn in Germany and the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Her research interests include 20th Century German Women's Literature, Foreign Language Acquisition, Intercultural Education, and Curriculum Development.

Gabriele has always been passionate about teaching and learning. She developed Bellarmine’s trans-curricular Baccalaureate Degree in FLIS (Foreign Languages and International Studies) in 1998, requiring the study of two languages with areas of concentration in History/Diplomacy, Translation/Interpretation, Teaching, Human Services, and Business/Economics. In 2007, she developed a Minor in International Studies which like the FLIS degree includes a study abroad requirement.

In 1995, Gabriele secured outside funding and established the Bellarmine International Programs Office, as well as the Foreign Language Department, growing the languages from 3 to 8 language options, and course offerings from 15 courses in 1995 to 82 courses over her 10 year tenure as its founding chair. Today, Gabriele devotes her energy to the broad internationalization of the University, and the IPO’s continued collaboration across all of Bellarmine’s schools and majors, growing the programs from a handful of students studying abroad in 1995 to currently over 30% of the full-time junior classes acquiring part of their education abroad with study options at over 150 bilateral or consortia partner sites in over 50 countries, while at the same time bringing the world to Bellarmine through international student and faculty exchanges, as well as foreign student recruitment.

Gabriele has devoted her career to internationalizing Bellarmine University. This has taken her around the globe, working with colleagues and programs on all continents, while also serving on a variety of international, national, state, and city boards, including the AIEA (Association of International Education Administrators) Executive Board, the ISEP (International Student Exchange Program) Board of Advisors, the CCSA (Center for Cooperative Study Abroad) Board of Trustees, the KIIS (Kentucky Institute for International Studies) Board of Directors, the CCCS (Center for Cross Cultural Studies) Board of Advisors, the Kentucky Department of Education Foreign Language Programs Review Board, The Sacred Heart Schools Board of Trustees, the Crane House/Asia Institute Board of Directors, the AATG-KY Executive Committee as State Testing Chair, the Mayor of Louisville’s Office of International Affairs Advisory Board and numerous on and off campus committees.

Gabriele is the recipient of the 2010 Mosaic Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Profession and Community, the 2008 Bellie Award for Internationalization at BU, the 2006 Kentuckiana Metroversity Award for Instructional Development, funded by the Grawemeyer Foundation, the 2005 William T. In her limited free time, she enjoys reading, writing, painting, jazz, yoga, hiking, an occasional golf game, international cooking, and meaningful conversations with friends around the world. Her weaknesses ....... engaging in too much simultaneously, Tuscany & Provence, a well brewed latté, licorice, a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and of course chocolate, chocolate, chocolate …!!!
