  M. Elaine Lonnemann

I have been asked many times why I am a Physical Therapist. Why didn’t I go to medical school or choose another profession? I am proud to be part of a profession in which I’ve had so many opportunities to grow and learn. I have been able to work closely with patients and assist in restoring their function, mobility and well-being. Perhaps growing up on a vegetable farm in the Midwest instilled a desire to use my hands skillfully in my work. Gaining knowledge of the art and science of our profession from many skilled professors of Physical Therapy, I have been drawn to the practice of manual physical therapy. I have practiced in a variety of settings such as private practice, hospitals, home health, and now teaching at a university. My interests and awareness in medical screening and treatment of the spine have progressed in these environments.

The academic setting constantly challenges me to learn more which is something I have always enjoyed. Students constantly challenge me to grow and I learn a great deal from them. They are a source of inspiration and motivate me to become a better clinician and researcher. I am privileged to work in a university like Bellarmine where teaching and the spirit of discovery are cultivated.
