Millennial Student Series

If you were one of the fifty people who squeezed into the Fireplace Room last November for the most interesting presentation on the Millennial Generation from Anne Bucalos and Claire Hughes – well then, you know how much buzz this topic generated and how much everyone wanted to continue the discussion.

Our plan for the Millennial student series was formed through the joint efforts of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Faculty Development Center, and the Faculty Forum (subcommittee of Faculty Development) – and the kind generosity of both Anne Bucalos and Claire Hughes. In the spring semester we presented a series of workshops on the Millennial Generation and their impact on us as educators and mentors.

For those who need a reminder about the Millennials – they are the generation born after 1977 and coming of age in the early years of the 21st century ….. At 80 million strong, the Millennial generation outnumbers even the Baby Boomers by 3 million and represents the single-largest demographic age group.  They are engaged, progressive, pro-environment, celebrate diversity, and have been nurtured (protected) by their families.  For them, the computer-based technology that continues to frustrate baby-boomers, has always existed and is simply part of the fabric of their lives (anyone who has watched a Millennial text message realizes that typing with one thumb on a phone keypad is the new keyboarding skill).

What’s all this talk about Millennials? Captivated by generationaldifferences?

Faculty members who felt the urge to put pen to paper were invited to join together over lunch for a “thinking/formulating/writing” session in the Fireplace room.
