Trademark Basics

A good place to start when researching trademarks.

Trademark Design Search Code Manual

Search by design categories i.g. amimals, food, shapes etc.  Search this database first before searching the Trademark Electronic Search System. Browse the Alphabetical Index for an image you are considering using for you trademark e.g. "airplanes".  You will see a design code associated with that type of image, in this case, 18.09.01.

Trademark Electronic Search System

Click on Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS).  This search engine allows you to search the USPTO's database of registered trademarks.  Use the Word and/or Design Mark Search (Structured).  Enter the design code for the image you searched in the Code Manual. In the field drop-down box, select "Design Code".  You will see a list of trademarks that use airplanes in thier design.
