A Woman of Inspiration: Regina Spector
“I’ve got a perfect body because my eyelashes catch my sweat.” She’s not perfect. She doesn’t have it all figured out. She doesn’t have a book club, lead a group of animal rights activists into Washington, D.C., or run the IronMan triathlon in nine hours, but she does have a voice and a piano and if those are the tools she was given to make changes and enrich lives, then that is exactly what she will do. She was blessed with hands that can play and a voice that can belt a tune; this is her perfect body.
Thursday November 19, 2009 the five-foot three-inch, red-headed, Russian-born, singer-songwriter made her first appearance in Louisville, Kentucky. She commanded the attention of the filled Louisville Palace Theatre with the help of a baby grand piano, a single spotlight and the beautiful voice with which she was blessed. To her, the flashing lights, video projection, and artificial fire were entirely unnecessary. The audience fell in love with her charismatic speech, the jokes she made between each song and even the endearing way in which she apologized for the single curse word uttered from her lips.
That night, the people of Louisville came to appreciate her for more than her music, which is due appreciation in itself. She stays true to her own style, lifts people up through her lyrics, and is not afraid to proclaim her faith. In a country where people are too afraid to even so much as utter a religious point of view, she puts it into her lyrics. “No one laughs at God in a hospital; no one laughs at God in a war. No one’s laughing at God when they’re starving or freezing or so very poor.” Ironically, that song Laughing With placed third on the American charts and received a nomination for the Soul and Jazz Awards Best Alternative Song.
A woman of inspiration is not necessarily a woman with a long list of good deeds suitable for a resume. A woman of inspiration is someone who is real and, in being who she is and letting that be good enough, is able to lift up others. She is able to inspire others not only by her lyrics, but her all around way of being, which is so simply her. Regina Spektor is a true woman of inspiration because she does have a perfect body and her eyelashes catch her sweat.
