LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 15, 2010) -- Bellarmine University students, alumni, faculty and staff raised just over $19,500 to help find a cure for cancer as part of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Approximately 280 people participated in the relay event, which ran from 6 p.m. on April 9 through 6 a.m. on April 10. Twenty-four cancer survivors took the ceremonial first lap.
"I look forward to this day every year," said Stephanie Pieper, assistant director of the Bellarmine Alumni Association and campus coordinator for Relay for Life. "Although our feet ache and we're exhausted from lack of sleep, there's not a better feeling! Cancer has touched all our lives in some way and it's powerful knowing that we can come together each year to celebrate, remember and hope."
The weekend event marked Bellarmine's seventh year participating in the Relay for Life.
About Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life gives people in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Relay teams camp out at the event location and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.
