Latest Selection from Rhodes' Reads
February 2010
The book I have selected for our Freshman read is Daniel Goleman’s
“Ecological Intelligence.” Goleman, author of international
bestseller, “Emotional Intelligence,” is on track again in his delivery
of a good read and resource for our citizen scholars committed to
Bellarmine’s efforts and newest initiative of sustainability and
responsible citizenship. Goleman recommends that we all become more
informed and responsible consumers.
December 2009: Millennials Rising
Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation
by Howe and Strauss, will provide you a sense of perspective, history,
humor and hope as we engage our newest college-age culture. As parents
of millennials you will want to read what the media, researchers and
the millennials have to say about our next great generation. As a
parent of both Generation X and millennial young adults, I have found
this book informative and helpful as I parent. This is an excellent
resource for improving communications, understanding, and recognizing
the potential of our current college-age young adults. Enjoy!
October 2009: The Last Lecture
I have selected "The Last Lecture" a moving and insightful book by
Randy Pausch. I read this book about a year ago and have kept several
of the principles in mind as I approach my role at Bellarmine each day.
I have also thought about what I would say, what words of encouragement
and words of wisdom I would want to share with the wonderful students
at Bellarmine if I were giving my last lecture. Dr. Pausch's last
lecture is filled with witty and inspirational stories of his life and
journey as a Professor.
There is a message and story in all of us. The challenge is often when, where and how will I leave my story, my legacy.
Enjoy the read and discussion with family and friends
August 2009: Becoming Who You Are, Insights On The True Self From Thomas Merton And Other Saints
This year the University decided to begin the year with a recommended
book that each new student would read prior to classes. The selection
was Becoming Who You Are, Insights On The True Self From Thomas Merton And Other Saints,
by James Martin. The University welcomes and embraces all students and
encourages them to become their own unique and true selves. The
reading and discussions related to the book helps our students examine
and reflect on their academic and personal journey while at Bellarmine.
I encourage you to read the book and share your
insights and thoughts with your son and daughter. I think you will
enjoy the book and discussions related to finding your true self
