four students stand in front of a sign for a hospital in guatemalaBellarmine University has been traveling to Guatemala in coordination with Professor Emeritus Bob Lockhart and Hearts in Motion for 15 years. Bellarmine DPT students will travel in coordination with Hearts in Motion to the locations of Zacapa, Gualan, Pueblo Modelo and Los Limones while in Guatemala. This service trip requires student to have a working knowledge of the Spanish language. Students will practice their Spanish speaking skills while performing physical therapy evaluations and treatments on local residents of the various communities they visit. Students traveling to Guatemala will work at the Kevin O’Halloran Rehabilitation Center located in Zacapa. During this trip, students will work side by side with their professors treating patients with various neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. During the last weekend of the trip, students have the opportunity to explore Antigua, Guatemala and visit local markets, restaurants and tourist spots. Typical costs for this 10-day trip are $900 (airfare, lodging, food). Students are required to attend and participate in an organized fund raising event for this trip.
