Faculty achievement sampler While our faculty members are primarily committed to classroom instruction and personal attention to students, they also devote time and energy to pursuits beyond campus. Here is a sampling of some notable faculty achievements from the past few months. 14 BELLARM INE MAGAZINE News on the hill Dr. Claire Badaracco has completed her Fulbright Scholar in Policy and Peace studies in Northern Ireland and returned to teaching International Media and Peacebuilding at Bellarmine this spring. The class linked in real time with classrooms in Beirut, Lebanon; Marquette University; and a media institute in Amman, Jordan. Enrollment in all satellite locations has nearly doubled since the class debuted last spring. The latest book by Dr. Jennifer Barker, assistant professor of English, was published by Routledge in November. The Aesthetics of Antifascist Film: Radical Projection explores the genesis and recurrence of antifascist aesthetics as manifested in the WWII, Cold War and Post-Wall historical periods Dr. Sarah Bush was the lead speaker on a presentation titled “Math + Art = Deep Learning” at the Regional Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Chicago in November 2012. In addition, she is serving as program chair for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference, to be held in Louisville this November. Ms. Tiffany Carbonneau, assistant professor of art, was invited to exhibit a large-scale outdoor video projection during the public art festival “Infecting the City” in Cape Town, South Africa. Through grants and a successful Kickstarter campaign, she traveled to install her work in March. Closer to home, Ms. Carbonneau’s proposal “New Albany Now” was accepted for the New Albany Public Art Project: Bicentennial Series. Her large-scale outdoor projection will be on display for two years and is being supported by a grant from the Carnegie Museum for Art and History. Dr. Tony Brosky, associate professor of physical therapy and assistant dean in the Lansing School, was one of just 15 clinical investigators in the country – and the only physical therapist – to be selected for the 2013 class of the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative’s prestigious Young Investigators Initiative Grant Mentoring Program. The program matches developing scientists with established physicians and academicians working in the area of musculoskeletal research, emphasizing bone and cartilage health – areas in which research is not keeping pace with the increasing burden of these diseases in the U.S., according to the USBJI. Mr. Mark Kaelin, biology instructor, was appointed to WebMD’s Board of Experts on Health and Fitness. As a certified strength-and-conditioning specialist, he fields questions on the topics of health, fitness, diet and exercise. Mr. John Sizemore is serving on a committee for Kentucky’s Educational Professional Standards Board for the purpose of writing new superintendent certification specifications. A poem by Mr. Frederick Smock, associate professor of English, was selected by Garrison Keillor to be read on his NPR radio program, Prairie Home Companion. The poem, Morning, is from his new collection, The Bounteous World. Read more about Bellarmine faculty research and accomplishments at www.bellarmine.edu/news
