THe reADerS WriTe how to avoid retirement Jim, i noted your editorial, “80 is the new 50” (From the editor, Summer 2012), and had to smile. i went through the same thought processes you describe and now at 80 i have this observation: if you want to make sure you never have to retire, take up a career as an independent writer. you can never afford to retire. Gene loGsDon ’61 uPPeR sAnDusKy, ohIo Mr. Logsdon, the “Contrary Farmer,” is the author of 28 books, including A Sanctuary of Trees, released in May. The goats go back to China i just returned from China, leading a group of 23 students from the university of Florida, where i now work, on a three-week, five-city retailing study tour. i think y’all have done great work with this publication and want to congratulate you. Since i couldn’t fit any of the staff into my briefcase, i thought i’d give the magazine itself a little tour! Maybe we can start a tradition. Keep up the good publications work! sTeVe KIRn ’69 GAInesVIlle, FlA. mystery photographer i am not positive, but i believe this photo on the back page of the magazine (Summer 2012) was taken by Charles Mc- Dermott. He worked as a photographer on The Lance in 1969 and 1970. i believe it was taken the summer of 1969. i do not recognize the individual who is the subject of the picture. i know that Charles stayed on campus most of the summer of 1969. He always carried his camera. He took a lot of photos of whatever he thought was interesting. He liked to work in black and white because he thought it was much better than any color picture. i hope this helps. lAWRenCe G. VoWels ’70 louIsVIlle 8 bellarmine magazine
