Message from the Chair

Welcome to Bellarmine University and thank you for your interest in Athletic Training (AT). Housed in the school of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences, along with the Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) and Bachelors of Arts in Exercise Science, the brand new Masters of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program completes the continuum of programs addressing student interest in exercise, athletic healthcare and rehabilitation. With more than 1,000 students enrolled in the College of Health Professions (CHP) at Bellarmine, these academically strong programs enjoy diverse faculty with a history of responsiveness to community social and workforce needs.

The curriculum provides students with knowledge and skills in the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and general medical conditions. Additionally, a strong emphasis is placed on preparing students to be skilled evidence based clinicians therefore, along with faculty mentors; students will create and implement independent research projects as part of a culminating experience. In addition to coursework, AT students will complete clinical experiences at sites that may include the college/university setting, high school setting, professional sports setting, and physician practices. Bellarmine offers 22 intercollegiate sports, including team, individual, gender specific and equipment- intensive.

The Athletic Department recently expanded its athletic training facilities with equipment, space, and staff necessary to provide excellent experiences for the MSAT students. The Bellarmine sports medicine team includes talented athletic trainers and physicians who are well qualified and willing to serve as clinical preceptors and mentors to AT students. With the unique nature of the AT program’s curriculum requiring access to traditional sports settings, the Athletic Department at Bellarmine will provide an excellent on-campus traditional, athletic training opportunity.

As you can see, athletic training education lies at the intersection of academics and athletics and we are lucky enough to have strong support from both partners at Bellarmine. Both the clinical and research experiences provide students with the opportunity for practical application of skills and knowledge ensuring each student is prepared for the Board of Certification (BOC) certification exam and their future profession.
