Dr. John S. Gatton, Professor Emeritus of English, teaches courses in early British literature, Shakespeare, modern dramatic literature, and occasional classes in Vampire literature, Lord Byron, and Oscar Wilde.  His publications include essays and book chapters on Byron as poet, prose writer, and playwright; Delacroix and Byron; Wilde; staging violence in Medieval drama; the history of theatre in Louisville; religion on the Broadway stage 1900-2005; American drama 1970-present; theatre reviews in Shakespeare Quarterly, and a volume on literary Paris in the 1920s. He has also directed eleven plays for Bellarmine’s Theatre Program. He serves as Faculty Advisor for STAGE, the student theatre group, for Bellarmine’s Friendly Society, and for Ariel, the University’s creative writing and arts journal. He acted with companies in South America, Dublin, and Paris, and, for ten summer seasons, with the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the English-Speaking Union, Kentucky Branch.
