PowerPoints are a great way to convey information to your students, but are you creating them where they are accessible to students who have learning, visual or hearing challenges? Even something simple like colors used can be a barrier to some students in accessing the information. When creating PowerPoints or other presentations the creator must follow some basic guidelines to make them accessible to all their students. Watching the layout, colors used, and order of the text will help accomplish the goal of accessibility for all. Here is a brief
video on this topic. Microsoft has a wonderful
guide on this topic as well which directs you to the most accessible designs. If you make your PowerPoint into a video you can easily upload it to Stream so that this tool can automatically caption it. Alt text for images and captions for video are two key components of making content accessible. If you have questions as to how to make documents, PowerPoints, or videos more accessible please contact
me,
Adam or
Gabrielle in the Faculty Development Center. We will be happy to assist you. If you are teaching online remember accessibility is a standard in the Quality Matters rubric making it quite essential.
