Globus pallidus
- a nuclear region of the basal ganglia
which is also called the paleostriatum. There are two layers of the
globus pallidus (medial and lateral) separated by the medial
intramedullary lamina. The lateral intramedullary lamina separates
the pallidum from the putamen. The internal portion of the globus
pallidus is (along with the substantia nigra reticularis) the principal
output nuclei of the basal ganglia, with projections to the thalamus and
the pedunculopontine nucleus.
