In June 2026, 25 alumni and friends traveled to Normandy and Paris for an unforgettable journey of history and connection on the first excursion in Bellarmine’s Knights Abroad travel program.

“I was awe-struck and educated every single day of this journey with people who became my newest friends,” Cindy Zipperle ’84 said. “From the beaches to the museums and bunkers, to the top of Mont-Saint-Michel and the Eiffel Tower, the trip was well planned and executed. I cannot think of one stop that I would suggest skipping next time.”

Guided by Michael Wade, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services and military historian, travelers experienced an immersive journey through the historic hallowed grounds of D-Day, including Omaha Beach, the Normandy American Cemetery, Pointe du Hoc, Sainte Mère Église, and the town of Bayeux.

“It exceeded my expectations, particularly because of the historical and personal insights offered by our faculty guide, Dr. Michael Wade,” said Mike Horrigan ’75.

For many, the experience was deeply personal, offering a meaningful opportunity to honor fathers, uncles, and family members who served during the invasion.

“Not only did it change my perspective of my father-in-law’s personal experience, but the detail Michael shared at each stop in Normandy and in Paris helped to tell the story in detail none of us would have gotten otherwise,” said Dr. Missy Stober ’86, ’89, ’99, ’18. 

The group also explored the broader region, including the iconic Mont-Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring a medieval abbey perched atop a rocky island. The itinerary concluded in Paris, where travelers experienced the city’s most celebrated landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Arc de Triomphe, while enjoying time together celebrating the bonds formed along the way.

This faculty-led journey through Italy will explore the life and legacy of St. Robert Bellarmine and the rich tradition of the Catholic faith. Hosted by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations and accompanied by Dr. Anna Christianson, associate professor of chemistry and member of the Society of Catholic Scientists, this immersive experience connects faith, reason, and discovery.

From a Papal Audience in Rome to the sacred beauty of Assisi and the birthplace of St. Robert Bellarmine in Montepulciano, encounter Italy as both pilgrimage and place of discovery.
