Bellarmine names Wiegandt as director of athletics

June 2, 2004

Bellarmine University President Joseph J. McGowan has announced that Scott Wiegandt is the school’s new director of athletics, beginning officially on June 1.

“We’re quite pleased to welcome Scott into his new position,” McGowan said. “His dynamic leadership has served our baseball program very well, and now I look forward to seeing all of Bellarmine’s athletic programs thrive under that leadership.”

Wiegandt (pronounced WEE-gant) is a Bellarmine product through and through. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bellarmine and was an All-American pitcher for the Bellarmine Knights during his playing days (1985-89). He also has served as Bellarmine’s assistant athletic director and head baseball coach since 1999. He had been serving as interim director of athletics since January of this year.

“It is with a great deal of enthusiasm and pride that I take hold of this opportunity for me to work as a professional in the place where I grew up,” Wiegandt said. “Having internal knowledge of Bellarmine and its pursuit of excellence, I feel that Bellarmine’s athletic programs are headed in the right direction. I want to grow with the great group of individuals on our staff in the athletics department. I want Bellarmine to be the place to be.”

Following his graduation from Bellarmine in 1989, Wiegandt spent nine seasons as a professional baseball player. Much of his career was spent at the AAA level with the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (Phillies affiliate), for whom he was named “Pitcher of the Year” in 1996. He also pitched in the Pirates and Cardinals organizations and played for the Louisville Redbirds in 1997. In 454 career games--mostly as a relief pitcher-- Wiegandt posted a career earned run average of 2.97 with a career record of 31-38 with 14 saves. He also recorded 485 strikeouts while allowing just 583 hits over 628 1/3 innings.

After his retirement as a player, Wiegandt taught and coached at Holy Cross High School for several years before coming back to Bellarmine. He also has served as a color commentator for Fox Sports Ohio and Insight Communications in their broadcasts of Louisville Bats baseball and Bellarmine basketball games.

David Porta, chair of the biology department and member of the director of athletics search committee, praised the selection of Wiegandt. “I’m extremely happy with the selection of Scott Wiegandt,” Porta said. “I’m confident he has the motivation and the intellect to handle on-the-job training,” pointing out Wiegandt is a graduate of Bellarmine’s biology department. “What Scott brings to the table is intimate knowledge of Bellarmine and the Greater Louisville community. Furthermore, I know he’ll bring a competitive spirit to the job of AD, and I hope that his hiring will also stir up support from our alumni for all the fine coaches and staff in our athletics department.”

Currently, Bellarmine competes in 18 intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division II level, mostly in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Men’s lacrosse is slated to begin next academic year at the NCAA Division I level.
